Summary:  
  • Topic sentence: title, author, strong verb, main idea   “Vision of Students” written by Dr. Welsch, depicts how students in school aren’t learning topics that they need to know for the future
  • Supporting ideas and explanations to prove main ideas
    • Ideas attributed back to author In the video; Welsch demonstrates the issues in the education system.
  • Concluding sentence: restate title, author, strong verb, main idea: Dr. Welsch Illustrates how students are not learning information that will be helpful for their future.


Response:
Topic sentence: title, author,,correctly portrays/ incorrectly portrays___(Main Idea)________ because ___________ .  “Vision of Students” by Dr. Michael Welsch correctly captures the fact that students need to learn how to handle technology properly so they can have a more successful future.

  1. Claim 1:
    • Set-up In Dr. Welsch’s video it explains how students read and write more on computers than books and paper
    • Evidence: Lead-in,  “ quotation” (Shakespeare 1.2.13-17).  In the video, the students say they read “2300 web pages” and write “500 pages of email” while only reading “8 books a year.”
    • Explanation of quotation to prove claim: explain quote, connect to claim These quotations show how the world is moving towards being entirely digital. Students need to learn how to use technology so they can thrive in the future.

  1. Good ideas in your summary- be careful of repetative statements in your summary. Make sure your ideas support and elaborate on main idea revealed in your topic sentence. Cite quote properly. Make sure to spend more time explaining what the quote is saying as well as its connections to the point of the paragrpah. Don't use phrases such as "These quotations" attribute quote to author. Make sure to expand on explanations.
