Response:
- Topic sentence: title, author,,correctly portrays/ incorrectly portrays___(Main Idea)________ because ___________ . “What’s Wrong With the Teenage Mind?” by Alison Gopnik correctly portrays how adolescents behavior is changing because kids are in the protection of their parents longer than ever before.
- Claim 1:
- Set-up In Gopnik’s article, Gopnik suggests that it is taking longer for children to become self dependent.
- Evidence: Lead-in, “ quotation” (Shakespeare 1.2.13-17). Gopnik explains that in old cultures, “In gatherer-hunter and farming societies, childhood education involves formal and informal apprenticeships”(Gopnik).
- Explanation of quotation to prove claim: explain quote, connect to claim In the past, young children decided what they wanted to do when they were younger so they focused on that topic and became self reliant faster. For example, children would start learning to hunt at a young age so they could be adept to dangerous tasks like use a machete. Now there are no apprenticeships so students/children take longer to know what they want to do which means they have to be supervised longer.
- Counterclaim (opposing viewpoint) 1: However, .... Gopnik missed many examples of how adolescents are reaching maturity faster than ever.
- Set-up Many adolescents are starting to take charge of their lives and becoming young entrepreneurs.
- Evidence: Lead-in, “ quotation” ( ) According to Investopedia, “Hart Main is a 14-year old that came up with the idea of manly scented candles” (Amanda Abella) He has now sold over 9000 units in over 60 stores.
- Explanation of quotation to prove counterclaim: explain quote, connect to claim Hart Main is a key example of how adolescents are becoming independent at a young age. While most kids his age would be at home playing video games, he is showing maturity and responsibility by making money from his own idea. He is a very responsible adolescent, showing that kids his age can rely on themselves. Young entrepreneurs are realizing what they want to do for a job early in life proving that teenagers are maturing more quickly.
